What is the meaning of purpose of export?

Purpose of export is the reason for you to export the goods to outside the UK. This is required by the carrier and local custom when an international shipment is created. Below is the explanation for each purpose of export option. 

Gift - purchase of new or used goods as a gift for someone else or for receiver's personal use
Merchandise - goods to be bought and sold
Personal - personal effect classified as used items (owned for a minimum of 6 months) intended for the receiver's personal use
Sample - commercial samples with no value or low value
Repair - goods returning to sender for repair 
Return - goods returning to sender
